Overview

Roland Sallinger is an LA cop who after nearly being killed by his greedy partner, and eventually being forced to retire for medical reasons, flees to San Antonio, Texas, after being asked to work as a bodyguard for the daughter of a wealthy businessman. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY Roland Sallinger (Steven Seagal) is an LA cop who gets a raw deal when his greedy partner tries to execute him over a pile of drug money. After surviving the shooting and being forced into retirement, he heads to Texas to work as a bodyguard for the daughter of a wealthy old friend. When she’s snatched by mobsters, Roland has to dust off his specific set of skills to get her back. It’s a standard, gritty straight-to-DVD action flick that trades complex plotting for broken bones and heavy-handed justice. THE PROS For a late-era Seagal movie, this is actually one of his more watchable efforts. It hits a 4 because the story is relatively straightforward and easy to follow, avoiding the confusing, messy editing that plagued his other films from this period. Seagal plays a slightly more human character here; he actually gets hurt and shows a bit of a softer side, which is an honest change of pace from his usual "untouchable" persona. The Texas setting adds a decent, sun-drenched grit to the visuals, and the fight choreography—while not groundbreaking—features enough of that classic Aikido limb-snapping to satisfy the hardcore fans. THE CONS It stays at a 4 because the budget limitations are glaring. The dialogue is often clunky, and several of Seagal’s lines are clearly dubbed by someone else in post-production, which is an immediate vibe-killer. It misses a higher mark because the pacing is quite slow, with long stretches of filler between the actual action scenes. The acting from the supporting cast is fairly forgettable, and the "villains" are about as generic as they come. By the time the final showdown rolls around, the movie has largely run out of steam, leaving you with a finale that feels a bit rushed and flat. THE VERDICT 4/10. An honest, middle-of-the-road actioner for the Seagal completionists. It’s better than his absolute worst work, but it’s still a far cry from his 90s peak. A fair shout if you’ve got 90 minutes to kill and a high tolerance for B-movie tropes.
