⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARYA razor-sharp, painfully funny adult comedy-drama that feels like a modern, alcohol-fueled chamber piece. Directed by Olivia Wilde, the story centers on Joe and Angela, a bourgeois married couple whose relationship has completely frozen over into constant bickering and resentful silence. The thin ice completely shatters when Angela invites their uninhibited upstairs neighbors, Pína and Hawk, down for evening drinks. What starts as an incredibly awkward social gathering quickly unravels into a chaotic, eye-opening night as the bohemian neighbors casually reveal their highly active, unconventional sex life and lay a shocking proposal directly on the table. THE PROSThe core quartet of actors are absolutely masterclass, playing off each other with a frantic, shifting energy that keeps you completely hooked. Penélope Cruz completely steals the show as the deeply confident sexologist Pína, treating the uptight hosts like a hilarious psychological science experiment. Seth Rogen puts in one of his absolute best career performances here, flexing brilliant dramatic muscle alongside his usual gruff humor as a frustrated, bad-backed music teacher going through a full-scale marital meltdown. Olivia Wilde’s direction is incredibly sharp, utilizing tight angles and a beautiful 35mm film grain to make the single-apartment setting feel intensely claustrophobic yet visually gorgeous. THE CONSThe first half-hour is a bit visually over-directed, trying way too hard to impress with odd, off-center camera angles and snappy edits before finally calming down and letting the actors breathe. While the dialogue is incredibly witty, the final act hits a slightly bumpy patch where the fast farce suddenly halts for a very heavy, serious emotional clearing of the air that can feel a touch jarring compared to the earlier laughs. THE VERDICTA great 8/10. It is a sophisticated, hilarious, and brilliantly performed comedy for adults that treats its touchy subject matter with raw honesty and zero judgment. It easily secures an 8 because the script is exceptionally clever, the performances are top-tier, and it marks a massive directorial return to form for Olivia Wilde after her previous stumble. It only misses a higher score because of that try-hard visual styling in the opening act, but it is a proper, gripping Friday night watch that will leave you talking.
