Leonardo DiCaprio

ActingLos Angeles, California, USALeonardo DiCaprio has spent over thirty years making it look ridiculously easy. While most child actors disappear into reality TV, dodgy adverts or the local panto circuit, Leonardo somehow grew up to become one of the most respected actors on the planet. Mind you, it didn't happen overnight. Behind the Oscar, the yachts and the endless internet jokes about his dating life is a bloke who's spent decades picking some of the boldest, weirdest and best films Hollywood has to offer. His first big taste of fame came in the early '90s, earning an Academy Award nomination before he'd even turned twenty for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Then came Titanic, and absolutely everything changed. Overnight, he wasn't just a rising actor anymore; he became the biggest heartthrob on Earth. Posters of Jack Dawson were plastered across bedroom walls everywhere, and poor old Kate Winslet probably couldn't walk ten feet without somebody asking about that floating door.Plenty of actors would have happily spent the next twenty years cashing in on that image, but Leonardo had other ideas. Instead, he teamed up with directors like Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino, building one of the strongest filmographies of his generation. Whether he was chasing criminals in Catch Me If You Can, battling the mob in The Departed, getting hopelessly lost inside dreams in Inception or crawling through the frozen wilderness in The Revenant, he never seemed interested in taking the easy option.Even after finally getting his long-awaited Oscar for The Revenant, he didn't put his feet up. He carried on picking fascinating projects, from Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood to Killers of the Flower Moon, proving that he's still far more interested in making great films than simply being a movie star. Fair play really. When you've already conquered Hollywood, you may as well spend your time working with the very best.

Insomniacs Trivia

• The Spider Surprise: While auditioning for What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Leonardo rescued a pet lizard from being run over outside the studio. The casting team were so impressed by how naturally kind he was that it became one of the many reasons they remembered him. The lizard, affectionately named "Mr. Magoo," even became his pet afterwards.• The Oscar Wait: Despite delivering iconic performances for decades, Leonardo had to wait until 2016 to finally win his first Academy Award for The Revenant. By that point, the internet had turned "Give Leo an Oscar" into one of the biggest running jokes in cinema history.• More Than Just Movies: Away from acting, Leonardo is one of Hollywood's most passionate environmental campaigners. Through his foundation, he has donated millions towards wildlife conservation, climate projects and protecting some of the world's most endangered ecosystems.

Insomniacs Take

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of those rare actors whose name alone is enough to get people interested in a film. He doesn't churn out three forgettable blockbusters a year or phone performances in for an easy payday. Instead, he waits, picks something special and usually reminds everyone why he's considered one of the very best. Whether he's shouting aboard the Titanic, sinking into dream worlds or wrestling bears in the freezing cold, Leonardo never feels like he's playing it safe. And honestly, cinema is much better for it.Click the Filmography tab to see all the Movies & Series linked to Leonardo DiCaprio on Insomniacs.
