⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is the son of a ruthless Russian crime lord who values strength above all else. After being left for dead during a hunting trip, a freak encounter with lion blood grants Sergei superhuman tracking abilities and predator-like instincts. Instead of joining his father’s criminal empire, he becomes a lethal vigilante, hunting down those he deems "prey"—including his own family. It’s a violent, R-rated origin story that attempts to ground a comic book villain in a gritty, blood-soaked reality. THE PROS The action doesn't hold back. This is a much more visceral, physical film than the usual superhero fare, leaning into the R-rating with brutal takedowns that feel heavy and impactful. Aaron Taylor-Johnson looks the part and brings a quiet, intense physicality to Kraven that keeps the character interesting even when the plot is thin. It hits a 6 because it ditches the "multiverse" nonsense for a straightforward, old-school revenge story. The relationship between Sergei and his father (Russell Crowe) provides a decent bit of friction that drives the drama forward. THE CONS The script is fairly basic and hits almost every predictable beat of a "troubled son" narrative. It stays at a 6 because the CGI for some of the animal-based powers can look a bit rubbery and out of place against the darker, grounded tone of the rest of the movie. It misses a higher mark because it struggles to justify why Kraven is a "hero" or even an anti-hero; he often feels like he’s just moving from one fight to the next without much of a clear philosophy. The ending also feels like a teaser for future movies rather than a satisfying conclusion to this one. THE VERDICT 6/10. An honest, gritty, and often savage action flick. It’s a fair shout if you’re tired of the sanitized versions of these characters, but don't expect it to change the game. It’s a simple "hunt or be hunted" story that delivers on the gore but plays it safe with the plot. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep the hunting scenes feeling authentic, the production filmed in various locations across London and Iceland, using real woods and rugged terrain to avoid a "studio" look.• Aaron Taylor-Johnson did a massive amount of his own stunts, including the sprinting and climbing sequences, to ensure Kraven’s predatory movement looked natural and not just like digital trickery.• Unlike the comics, where Kraven uses a mystical serum to gain his powers, the film opted for a more "biological" accidental origin to fit the gritty, modern aesthetic they were aiming for. THE VIBE Like a predator stalking through tall grass. It smells of wet fur, damp earth, and the metallic tang of a cold hunting knife.
