⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Peter Sutherland is a low-level FBI agent whose job is about as exciting as watching paint dry: he sits in a windowless White House basement manning a phone that never rings. It’s part of "Night Action," a top-secret emergency line for deep-cover spies. One night, the phone actually rings. On the other end is Rose Larkin, a tech CEO whose aunt and uncle have just been murdered. Suddenly, Peter is thrust into a sprawling conspiracy involving moles in the Oval Office, high-stakes assassinations, and a metro bombing that was much more than a random act of terror. THE PROS This is an 8/10 because it’s the ultimate "comfort" thriller—it doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it spins it perfectly. Gabriel Basso is a great lead, playing Peter with a mix of Boy Scout integrity and "don't mess with me" physicality. The chemistry between him and Luciane Buchanan (Rose) feels earned, and the show moves at a breakneck speed that makes it almost impossible not to hit "Next Episode." It’s a winner because it balances the glossy White House politics with gritty, street-level action, making it feel like a modern-day 24 or Bourne Identity. THE CONS It misses a 9/10 because it can be a bit predictable if you’ve seen more than two spy movies in your life. You can usually spot the traitors from a mile away, and some of the dialogue feels a bit "standard-issue thriller." INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • No Stunt Double Needed: Gabriel Basso is a legit athlete and actually performed many of his own stunts. In the Season 3 Istanbul sequences, he really was the one driving the car backwards and doing 180-degree turns—the production even got him certified for professional precision driving.• Book to Screen: The show is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk. Showrunner Shawn Ryan (the genius behind *The Shield*) read it in one sitting and knew immediately it had the "hook" needed for a long-form series.• Real Locations: While the show is set in Washington D.C., the first season was primarily filmed in Vancouver. By the time they reached Season 3, the production moved to New York City and even included location shoots in Mexico City and the Dominican Republic. THE VIBE Like a fresh pot of coffee during an all-night stakeout. It smells like gunpowder, expensive office carpet, and old government files. It’s urgent, slick, and very loud. It makes you want to buy a burner phone, double-check your security settings, and realize that the person sitting in the basement might be the only one you can trust.
