    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Brad Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a retired F1 legend who gets pulled back into the cockpit to mentor a rising young superstar, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). Driving for the fictional APXGP team, Hayes has to navigate the high-stakes world of modern racing, dealing with massive egos and the physical toll of a sport that has moved on without him. Filmed during actual Grand Prix weekends, the movie puts you right in the middle of the pack, capturing the deafening roar of the engines and the split-second decisions made at 200mph. It’s a high-octane look at what it takes to survive on the grid when everyone else is younger, faster, and hungrier than you. THE PROS The cinematography is a total winner; using actual F1 cars with custom cameras makes the racing scenes look more sincere and gripping than any CGI ever could. Brad Pitt brings a weathered, punchy energy to Hayes that makes his comeback feel honest rather than a damp squib. It’s an 8/10 because the sound design is epic status—you can practically feel the vibrations of the power units through the screen. Damson Idris is pure quality as the arrogant rookie, providing a great foil for Pitt’s old-school grit. It’s a winner for its realism, as the production worked closely with Lewis Hamilton to ensure the technical details and the "paddock politics" felt absolute spot on for 2026 audiences. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the plot is a bit predictable, following the "old mentor and cocky student" tropes that we’ve seen in plenty of other sports movies. The middle part can feel slightly sluggish when it moves away from the track to focus on the corporate side of the sport, which isn't quite as gripping as the racing. It misses a 9/10 mark because some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy and feels a bit quality-deficient compared to the grounded nature of the action. At over two hours, it’s a bit of a marathon, and if you aren't already a fan of Formula 1, some of the technical jargon might feel like a bit of a head-scratcher. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended—it’s essentially 'Top Gun: Maverick' but for racing fans. A winner for the sheer spectacle of seeing F1 cars pushed to the limit on the big screen. Go and watch it on the biggest screen possible to truly appreciate the camera work—it’s quality cinema that sets a new bar for the genre. This remains an anticipated watch for anyone who loves speed and high-stakes drama. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Realistic Speed: Unlike many racing films that use "camera tricks" to make cars look fast, the actors actually drove modified Formula 2 cars on real tracks. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris had to undergo months of intense training to handle the G-forces, making their sweat and strain in the cockpit look sincere and honest. • Paddock Integration: The APXGP team was treated like a real 11th team during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. They had their own garage, pit wall, and hospitality suite at various races.
