⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY It’s 1959, and Ip Man is living a relatively quiet life in Hong Kong with his wife and son. The peace is shattered when a corrupt American property developer named Frank (Mike Tyson) starts using a local gang to bully a primary school into selling its land. Ip Man and his disciples take it upon themselves to guard the school, leading to a series of escalating confrontations. While dealing with the gangsters, Ip Man crosses paths with Cheung Tin-chi, a fellow Wing Chun practitioner and rickshaw puller who is secretly gunning for the title of Grandmaster. To make matters worse, Ip Man faces a devastating personal crisis when his wife is diagnosed with cancer, forcing him to choose between his public duty as a hero and his private role as a husband. THE PROS Donnie Yen is a winner as always, bringing a sincere, weary grace to the character that makes him feel more human than ever. The addition of Mike Tyson is a punchy surprise; he’s not just a cameo but a quality physical threat, and his three-minute brawl with Ip Man is epic status. The fight choreography by Yuen Woo-ping is pure quality, especially the narrow hallway fight against a Muay Thai assassin and the final Wing Chun vs. Wing Chun showdown. It’s a 7/10 because the emotional arc involving Ip Man’s wife, Wing-sing, is actually moving and gives the movie a heart that most action sequels lack. Max Zhang is also quality as the ambitious rival, providing a mirror to Ip Man’s own journey. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the plot is a bit of a damp squib, feeling like two or three different movies stitched together. You’ve got the school bullying plot, the property developer plot, the rival master plot, and the terminal illness plot all fighting for screen time. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish in the middle as it shifts from high-octane action to melodrama, which might leave some fans wanting more fights. It misses an 8/10 mark because Mike Tyson’s character just sort of vanishes from the story once his fight is over, making his entire subplot feel a bit quality-deficient in terms of resolution. Also, the Bruce Lee appearance is little more than a punchy teaser that doesn't really go anywhere. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and highly recommended—it’s a sincere, emotional chapter in the saga that features some of the best technical martial arts in the series. A winner for the Tyson fight and the poignant ending. Go and watch it for the "one-inch punch" finale—it’s quality fanservice. This was a highly anticipated entry that mostly delivered on its promises. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Real Combat: Mike Tyson reportedly broke one of Donnie Yen’s fingers during their fight sequence. Tyson, who was a massive fan of the first two films, was supposedly so enthusiastic that he accidentally clipped Yen’s hand during a stunt, but Yen stayed sincere to the character and finished the take.• Bruce Lee Legal Row: The production originally wanted to use a CGI version of Bruce Lee for the film. However, Bruce Lee’s estate threatened to sue, so the filmmakers pivoted to casting Danny Chan, who had previously played the legend in a TV series.• Choreography Shift: This was the first film in the series not choreographed by Sammo Hung. Instead, the legendary Yuen Woo-ping (who did 'The Matrix' and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon') took over, which is why the fights feel a bit more grounded and punchy compared to the second film. THE VIBE Like an old photograph that’s starting to fade. It smells like medicinal tea, incense, and old gym mats.
