⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Staff Sergeant 81 (Alan Ritchson) is a powerhouse soldier haunted by a tragic ambush in Afghanistan that claimed his brother’s life. Driven by survivor's guilt, he enters the grueling U.S. Army Ranger selection process. During the final 24-hour "Death March" in a remote forest, 81 and his squad stumble upon a crashed object they assume is a downed aircraft. It turns out to be a high-tech alien spacecraft that unleashes a "War Machine"—a towering, relentless mechanical hunter designed for total annihilation. Outgunned and cut off from command, the recruits must swap their training protocols for primitive survival tactics to take down a technological god. THE PROS Alan Ritchson is a total winner in this; he brings a sincere, physically imposing presence that makes the "one-man army" vibe feel grounded. Director Patrick Hughes ditches the comedy of 'The Hitman's Bodyguard' for a punchy, testosterone-fueled survival thriller that feels like a quality throwback to 'Predator'. The quarry battle is epic status—the action is staged with a clarity and scale that puts most recent streaming movies to shame. It’s a 7/10 because the creature design is pure quality, making the "Machine" feel like a genuinely terrifying, cold-blooded threat. Stephan James also puts in a quality performance as "7," providing the emotional anchor 81 needs to keep from losing his humanity. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the supporting cast, including Dennis Quaid and Jai Courtney, is a bit of a damp squib, given barely five minutes of screentime between them.
