Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY It’s the sweltering summer of 2001 in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, right as the Argentinian economic crisis is about to explode. Natalia (Nati) and her tight-knit group of friends are killing time at the local quarry lake, all while pining for their lifelong mate, Diego. Nati thinks she’s finally got a clear shot at him until an outsider named Silvia arrives and steals his attention. Consumed by jealousy and backed by the oppressive heat, Nati turns to the dark folk magic and incantations passed down by her grandmother to jinx the new couple. What starts as a petty teenage curse spiraling out of control merges with a town-wide supernatural rot, turning a coming-of-age story into a brutal, visceral nightmare. THE PROS This is epic status for folk horror fans. Laura Casabé delivers a punchy, atmospheric slow-burn that feels like 'Carrie' met 'City of God' in a sweat-drenched fever dream. Dolores Oliverio is a total win as Nati; her background as a dancer gives her a haunting, physical presence that makes her silent stares feel lethal. The way the film weaves the real-life 2001 social collapse into the supernatural horror is quality storytelling—it’s sincere, gritty, and makes the dread feel inescapable. It’s an 8/10 because it captures that specific, ugly side of teenage obsession with zero filter. The sound design, full of buzzing flies and distant riots, is a winner for building pure tension.
