Overview

Deep down in the Pacific Ocean in the subterranean city of Bikini Bottom lives a square yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, loves his job as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, and has a knack for getting into all kinds of trouble without really trying. When he's not getting on the nerves of his cranky next door neighbor Squidward, SpongeBob can usually be found smack in the middle of all sorts of strange situations with his best buddy, the simple yet lovable starfish, Patrick, or his thrill-seeking surfer-girl squirrel pal, Sandy Cheeks.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY If you haven't seen a pineapple under the sea, you’ve missed out on the most successful nautical nonsense in history. SpongeBob SquarePants (1999–Present) follows an absurdly optimistic sea sponge who works as a fry cook, hangs out with a dim-witted starfish, and lives next to a depressed octopus. What started as a weird experiment by a marine biologist turned into a global powerhouse that defines "surreal humor." Whether he’s hunting jellyfish or trying to pass his driving test for the thousandth time, SpongeBob’s world is a brightly coloured escape that’s just as much for adults as it is for kids. THE PROS This is a 9/10 because it’s a genuine masterclass in character design and voice acting. Tom Kenny’s performance is iconic, and the dynamic between the optimistic SpongeBob and the cynical Squidward is one of the best pairings in TV history. The show is at its peak when it leans into the weird and wonderful—like the "Sweet Victory" Super Bowl performance or the constant fourth-wall breaks. It’s a rare show that works on two levels: kids love the slapstick, while adults appreciate the dry, almost nihilistic jokes hidden in the background. Even after 25 years, it still feels fresh, with the 2026 season continuing to pull in massive numbers. THE CONS It misses the 10/10 "Epic" mark because, like any show that’s been on for decades, there was a noticeable dip in the writing after the first movie in 2004. For a long time, the characters felt a bit too "loud" and lost some of that early, dry wit. Some of the newer episodes can feel a bit frantic compared to the classic stuff from the first three seasons. It’s a 9 rather than a 10 because the massive expansion into spin-offs and movies has occasionally diluted the original magic of the Bikini Bottom we grew up with. THE VERDICT A solid 9/10. It’s an "Epic" in the world of animation and a total staple for anyone who likes a laugh. It isn't a 10 because of the uneven quality over the last few decades, but its legacy is untouchable. If you want a show that makes you feel like a kid again while still giving you plenty to laugh at as an adult, this is the one. It’s a titan of the vault that isn't showing any signs of slowing down. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Mop Trouble: SpongeBob was originally going to be named "SpongeBoy," and the show was titled *SpongeBoy Ahoy!*. The creator had to change it at the last minute because the name was already copyrighted by a company that makes mops.• Brainy Origins: Stephen Hillenburg, the show's creator, was an actual marine biologist. He originally created a comic book called *The Intertidal Zone* to teach students about sea life, which featured an early version of a sponge character that eventually became the world's most famous resident of a pineapple.• Rule Book: The show runners have a strict set of "rules" they never break. One of the big ones is that they will never explain why Mr. Krabs’ daughter, Pearl, is a whale. Another is that the Krabby Patty is strictly vegetarian—there’s no actual meat in the burgers because having a fish eat meat in Bikini Bottom would be a bit too dark. THE VIBE Like a sugar rush at a theme park, the smell of grease from a deep fryer, and the sound of a slide whistle on repeat. It’s loud, colourful, and completely unhinged in the best way. It makes you want to live in a fruit, fail your driving test, and realize that being a "Goofy Goober" is actually a pretty great way to live.
