⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY If you think your school uniform is a bit much, try wearing a pointy hat and carrying a terrified cat on a broomstick. The Worst Witch (2017–2020) is a top-tier reboot of Jill Murphy’s classic books, following Mildred Hubble—a girl from a non-magical background who accidentally crashes into the world of Cackle’s Academy. Alongside her mates Maud and Enid, she has to survive the strict gaze of Miss Hardbroom and the constant schemes of her rival, Ethel Hallow. It’s a sincere, high-octane coming-of-age story that proves you don’t need a massive lightning scar to be a hero—sometimes just surviving double Potions is a win. THE PROS The casting is spot on; Bella Ramsey is 100% authentic as the clumsy but well-meaning Mildred, perfectly capturing that "disaster-magnet" energy. The relationship between the staff is a total win, particularly the dynamic between the kind-hearted Miss Cackle and the terrifyingly sharp Miss Hardbroom. It’s a genuine masterclass in updating a retro series for the modern era without losing the charm of the original source material. The CGI and production values are a massive step up from previous versions, making the magic feel punchy and high-octane. It’s top-tier entertainment that manages to be both cozy and genuinely exciting. THE CONS It settles at an 8/10 because the final season hit a bit of a Languid Burn after a major lead casting change, which felt like a bit of a head-scratcher for some long-term fans. While the new faces did their best, that 100% authentic chemistry from the early seasons was hard to replicate. It misses the 9/10 mark because some of the mid-series plot arcs—like the search for Mildred’s father—can feel a bit wet compared to the sharp, episodic magic of the books. This was a sincere move by the crew to ensure the young actresses didn’t catch a chill during those high-octane "wet" stunts, keeping the production 100% authentic without the frostbite. • No Copycats: The show’s lead writer, Emma Reeves, witty-ly avoided watching the 1998 version of the show while developing this reboot. She wanted to ensure her vision was a sincere reflection of the original books rather than a copy of the previous TV series, making the 2017 run feel fresh and spot on. • Artistic License: In the entrance exam episode, Mildred witty-ly fails her written test because she fills the paper with drawings instead of answers.
