Overview

Axel Foley returns to the land of sunshine and palm trees to investigate the near-fatal shooting of police Captain Andrew Bogomil. With the help of Sgt. Taggart and Det. Rosewood, they soon uncover that the shooting is associated with a series of "alphabet" robberies masterminded by a heartless weapons kingpin—and the chase is on.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Axel Foley heads back to the 90210 after his pal Captain Bogomil is gunned down by a mysterious group of "Alphabet Bandits." Teaming up again with Rosewood and Taggart, Axel goes deep undercover to track down a massive arms-smuggling ring. The trail leads them to a high-end gun club run by a cold-blooded businessman and his towering blonde assassin. It’s a race to stop the next big hit while navigating the glossy, high-stakes world of Beverly Hills. THE PROS Tony Scott’s directing is a win. He gives the film a sleek, high-contrast look that makes the action feel punchy and expensive. Eddie Murphy is in top form here; his "Building Inspector" and "Fire Marshal" rants are absolute gold. Rosewood’s obsession with big guns and Taggart’s grumpiness make for an epic trio. The pacing is much faster than the original, and the shootout at the oil fields is a great finale. It’s a good movie because it keeps the chemistry alive while cranking up the explosions. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the plot is a bit predictable and follows the "sequel rulebook" a little too closely. Brigitte Nielsen is a striking villain, but the main baddie is a bit of a damp squib who doesn't get enough screen time to feel like a real threat. It misses a 9/10 mark because it loses some of the "fish out of water" charm from the first film, as Axel is already a pro at playing the Beverly Hills system. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation for anyone who loves 80s action. It’s a winner for a Friday night and a proper follow-up to a classic. Go and watch it for the "Shakedown" opening and the banter—it’s quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Ferrari Troubles: The black Ferrari Axel drives at the start of the film actually belonged to the director, Tony Scott. He was so protective of it that the crew had to be incredibly careful during the driving scenes.• Ad-Libbed Magic: Just like the first film, much of the dialogue between the three leads was made up on the spot. The "Supercop" argument in the car was almost entirely improvised by Murphy, Reinhold, and Ashton.• Playboy Shoot: The scenes at the mansion were filmed at the real Playboy Mansion. Hugh Hefner was a fan of the first movie and allowed the crew to film there for a discounted rate. THE VIBE Like a fast drive in a convertible with the bass turned up. It smells like expensive cigars, leather seats, and gunpowder.
