Overview

Following the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman assumes responsibility for Dent's crimes to protect the late attorney's reputation and is subsequently hunted by the Gotham City Police Department. Eight years later, Batman encounters the mysterious Selina Kyle and the villainous Bane, a new terrorist leader who overwhelms Gotham's finest. The Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Eight years after the Joker’s rampage, Bruce Wayne has become a recluse, and Batman is a wanted fugitive. However, the peace Gotham enjoys is a lie built on a cover-up. Everything comes crashing down when Bane, a hulking masked revolutionary with a voice like a pipe organ, emerges from the sewers to "liberate" Gotham through nuclear terror and class warfare. A broken Bruce must find his way out of a literal and psychological pit to save a city that has branded him a villain, aided by a mysterious cat-burglar with her own agenda. THE PROS Tom Hardy is a total belter as Bane; even with half his face covered, he radiates a terrifying physical presence and a sincere sense of intellectual superiority. The scope of the film is an absolute win, featuring some of the most massive practical stunts in the trilogy—the mid-air plane heist in the opening is a celebratory explosion of old-school filmmaking. Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman is a sincere treat, bringing a playful but lethal energy that provides a perfect foil to Bale’s grim determination. It’s a sincere, operatic conclusion that ties the trilogy’s themes of symbols and legacy into a knot that actually feels definitive. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the plot is a bit of a head-scratcher when you look at the logistics—how Bruce gets back to Gotham from a desert pit in the middle of nowhere with no money or ID is a sincere leap of faith. The pacing in the middle act can feel a tad bloated, and some of the police tactics during the final battle are a bit silly, even for a comic book movie. It misses the 9/10 status because it lacks the razor-sharp focus and psychological tension of its predecessor, occasionally choosing "bigness" over the grounded grit that started the franchise.
