⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Mike Banning is back, and this time he’s swapped the White House for the rainy streets of London. In this 2016 sequel, the British Prime Minister dies under "mysterious" circumstances, and every world leader gathers for the funeral. It turns out to be a giant trap set by an arms dealer looking for some digital-age revenge. London landmarks get pulverized, and Banning (Gerard Butler) has to keep President Asher (Aaron Eckhart) alive while sprinting through a city that has effectively been turned into a shooting gallery. THE PROS If you want to see things go "boom" with zero intellectual overhead, this is your gold standard. The action is relentless, and the "one-take" style alleyway shootout is a genuine, technical highlight that briefly elevates the movie above standard bargain-bin action. Gerard Butler remains the king of the "angry dad" action genre, and his chemistry with Eckhart’s "President Action Hero" is a sincere, fun throwback to 80s buddy-cop dynamics. THE CONS It hits a 6/10 because the CGI can be a total head-scratcher; some of the explosions look like they were rendered on a laptop from 2004. The script is a bit of a maze of clichés, and the logic of hundreds of terrorists being able to infiltrate the British police and Queen’s Guard unnoticed is a massive stretch even for this franchise. It misses the higher marks because it lacks the "Die Hard in a house" charm of the first film, opting instead for a "languid" middle act where they just walk through dark tunnels. THE VERDICT A 6/10. It’s a gripping, visceral popcorn flick that doesn't care about your "realism" or "diplomatic nuance." It’s a bit of a let-down if you wanted a smart thriller, but as a "Go To" for Friday night chaos, it delivers exactly what it says on the tin. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Bulgaria’s London: Despite the title, a huge chunk of the movie was filmed at Nu Boyana Film Studios in Bulgaria, where they built a massive, "authentic" replica of St. Paul's Cathedral and surrounding London streets.• Martian Conflict: The film was originally set for a 2015 release but was pushed back to March 2016 specifically to avoid a box office clash with Ridley Scott’s *The Martian*.• Director Swap: Antoine Fuqua (who directed *Olympus Has Fallen*) couldn't return because he was busy with *The Equalizer*. Swedish director Babak Najafi stepped in, bringing a grittier, European thriller vibe to the action.• Last Role: This was the final film role for actor Alex Giannini (who played the Italian Prime Minister); he sadly passed away shortly before the film’s release in late 2015.• Realism Effort: To add a layer of authenticity to the chaos, the production cast real-life UK news reporters to play themselves during the televised attack sequences.
