⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is a banker with a perfect life and a beautiful girlfriend, Molly (Demi Moore), until a botched mugging leaves him dead on a dark New York street. Trapped as a ghost in the mortal world, Sam discovers his death wasn't an accident and that Molly is in visceral danger. Unable to communicate directly, he enlists the help of a reluctant, "part-time" psychic named Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) to stop his killer and say one final goodbye. It’s a gritty, pained, and surprisingly funny cocktail of romance, supernatural thriller, and crime drama. THE PROS This is an honest heavyweight of 90s cinema that still hits like a ton of bricks. It hits an 8 because the chemistry between Swayze and Moore is sincere and legendary—that pottery wheel scene is an epic bit of filmmaking that managed to make ceramics feel visceral. Whoopi Goldberg is the total highlight here, providing punchy, comedic relief that keeps the pained tragedy from becoming too heavy. The visual effects for the "shadow demons" were a fair shout for terrifying back in the day and still hold a gritty, unsettling edge.
