⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY This 2011 Indian psychological thriller follows a guy named Ajay (Siddharth) who is living his best life in Chennai, doing random acts of kindness and generally being the world’s most likable neighbor. He’s got two women in his orbit: a photojournalist who falls for him and a doctor back in the States. The catch? He’s living on a strict "180-day" deadline because of a terminal diagnosis. He decides to run away and live a lifetime in six months without telling anyone why. It’s a "YOLO" manifesto wrapped in a colorful, dramatic, and occasionally confusing package. THE PROS The cinematography is stunning. It was shot on "Red" digital cameras back when that was a huge deal, and it looks incredibly crisp and vibrant. Siddharth carries the movie with his usual charm, making the "man with a secret" trope feel more grounded than it actually is. The music is a highlight—the songs are catchy and integrated well into the visual storytelling. It’s a movie that tries to be deep about the "now," and for the first half, it actually succeeds in making you appreciate the small things. THE CONS It’s a bit of a melodrama overload. Like many thrillers that rely on a "timer," it can feel a bit emotionally manipulative. The "medical" logic is questionable at best—standard movie-science rules apply here. The pacing also takes a hit in the second half when the "big secret" is revealed; it shifts from a breezy life-lesson movie into a heavy-duty tearjerker that drags its feet to reach the finish line. If you aren't a fan of high-stakes romantic drama, you might find yourself checking the clock. THE VERDICT A 6/10 because it’s a decent watch that looks beautiful, but it doesn't quite stick the landing. It’s "The Business" if you want a stylish, emotional Indian film that’s a bit different from the usual masala fare, but it’s not going to change your life. It’s the kind of movie you watch once, enjoy the visuals, and then promptly forget the plot details. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA The film was shot simultaneously in both Tamil and Telugu, meaning the actors had to do every scene twice with different dialogue. Also, the title 180 refers to the 180 days the protagonist believes he has left to live—though the director (Jayendra) has said it also represents a "180-degree turn" in life. Interestingly, the film marked the directorial debut of Jayendra, who was actually a veteran of the advertising world, which explains why every frame looks like a high-end commercial. THE VIBE Like a sunset on a beach—gorgeous to look at and puts you in a reflective mood, but once it’s over, you’re just left in the dark wondering where the day went.
