⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Despite the title date, you're likely thinking of the 2026 Filipino sensation that just hit Netflix. 18th Rose follows Rose (Xyriel Manabat), a spirited teen whose life goal is the perfect debut (the traditional Filipino 18th birthday). She strikes a deal with the new kid, Jordan (Kyle Echarri), to help him run for student body president in exchange for help funding her dream party. It starts as a "stinky" meet-cute in a garden and follows a classic rom-com blueprint, but don't let the balloons fool you—this movie pivots into a tear-jerker about belonging and sacrifice that’ll have you reaching for the tissues by the final dance. THE PROS The chemistry between Xyriel Manabat and Kyle Echarri is a "Guaranteed Banger." Manabat is a revelation in her first leading role, bringing an emotional weight that makes Rose feel like someone you’ve known your whole life. The film also does "The Business" by tackling deeper themes like the "American Dream" and family expectations, elevating it above your average teen flick. It’s a Masterpiece of "unexpected feels"—you go in for the debutante dress and stay for the heartbreaking reality of young love hitting the brick wall of real life. THE CONS It is a "Melodrama Minefield." While the first half is a charming, breezy rom-com, the second half leans so heavily into tragic twists that it can feel a bit manufactured. It’s a 7/10 because the pacing is a little uneven; at 131 minutes, it definitely feels its length during the slower, "bunker-like" emotional stretches. There’s also a "1-foot height difference" between the leads that is a bit distracting in wide shots, though they make it work.
