Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Zeta is a high-level CNI operative who has ditched the spy life to care for his ailing mother. He’s dragged back into the game when four former Spanish intelligence officers are assassinated across the globe in a single day. The CNI discovers they were all part of "Operation Ciénaga," a messy covert mission in Colombia 35 years ago. Zeta is tasked with finding the fifth and only surviving member of the team before the assassins do. Things get personal when he realizes the survivor is actually his father, a man he thought died decades ago. Teaming up with a Colombian agent named Alfa, Zeta has to navigate a labyrinth of old betrayals and political manipulation to keep his father alive. THE PROS Mario Casas is a winner as Zeta; he brings a moody, introspective vibe to the role that makes him feel like a real person rather than just a cardboard action hero. Luis Zahera is quality as Salvador Ancares (the father), basically stealing every scene he’s in with a performance that has real bite. The film looks epic status—the production quality is top-tier, and the location shooting in Rio de Janeiro and Colombia gives it a gritty, international flavor. It’s a 6/10 because the opening chase through the favelas is punchy and well-choreographed, and the rivalry between Zeta and Alfa (Mariela Garriga) adds some much-needed spark to the proceedings. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because it gets absolutely bogged down in its own plot. There is so much "infodumping" in the middle act that it feels more like a history lesson than a spy thriller. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish because the film relies heavily on lengthy flashbacks to the 80s that disrupt the flow of the present-day hunt. It misses a 7/10 mark because the twists are a bit predictable and lean too hard on well-worn "shadow organization" tropes. While the action is quality when it happens, it’s often interrupted by people sitting in rooms explaining things to each other, which is a bit of a damp squib for a two-hour-plus movie. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent and highly recommended if you’re a fan of Mario Casas or slow-burn European spy thrillers like 'Slow Horses'. It’s a winner for the acting and the visuals, but be prepared for a lot of talking. Go and watch it on Prime Video for the chemistry between the leads—it’s quality even when the script isn't. THE VIBE Like a cold glass of whiskey in a dark office. It smells like old paper files, humidity, and cigarette smoke.
