Overview

While working undercover as a bodyguard to arms dealer Harry, former-soldier-turned-secret-service-agent Ewan survives a bloody shootout with a member of an Islamic terrorist cell who steals Harry's briefcase full of Semtex explosives and escapes. Ewan's spymasters task Ewan with hunting down the cell members and retrieving the briefcase.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY A grim, brutal British political thriller that looks at the war on terror from two opposing sides. Ewan is a hard-nosed, cynical secret service agent tasked with tracking down and eliminating a homegrown extremist cell operating in London. On the flip side, the film charts the journey of Ash, a bright university student who gets brainwashed by a radical recruiter and turns into a cold-blooded suicide bomber. The two storylines hurtle toward a bloody collision course as Ewan racing against the clock to stop a devastating attack on a high-profile hotel. THE PROS Sean Bean is fantastic as the grizzled, world-weary operative, bringing his trademark grit and a massive physical presence to some incredibly nasty, realistic knife fights. Abhin Galeya puts in an outstanding performance as Ash, handling a difficult role with real nuance and showing exactly how an ordinary bloke can be manipulated into doing something horrific. The film doesn't pull any punches with its violence, showing the raw, unglamorous terror of urban warfare in a way that feels incredibly tense and close to home. THE CONS The script handles its political themes with about as much subtlety as a brick through a window, often forcing characters to deliver heavy-handed speeches about religion and foreign policy. The tiny budget shows through in a few of the flatly lit indoor scenes and some cheap-looking digital blood effects during the gun battles. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It is a mean, gritty, and deeply uncomfortable thriller that offers a much darker look at modern espionage than your typical Hollywood blockbuster. It securely lands a 7 because the dual-narrative structure keeps the pacing fast and the lead performances are top-tier. It misses out on a higher score due to some clunky, unsubtle dialogue, but it remains a gripping watch for anyone who likes their action movies raw and grounded.
