⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Set two years before the Civil War, Django (Jamie Foxx) is a slave whose life takes a sharp turn when he’s bought by Dr. King Schultz, a German bounty hunter who’s as lethal as he is polite. Schultz needs Django to identify a trio of brothers, and in exchange, he promises to help Django rescue his wife, Broomhilda, from the clutches of Calvin Candie—a francophile plantation owner who enjoys "Mandingo fighting" and long, racist monologues over dinner. It’s a Spaghetti Western with a Southern twist, where the "D" is silent but the gunfire is very, very loud. THE PROS The performances are untouchable. Christoph Waltz delivers another masterclass in "deadly charm," but Leonardo DiCaprio nearly steals the show as the repulsive Calvin Candie; he plays the villain with a terrifying, pampered energy. Then there’s Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, the "house slave" who is arguably more manipulative than his master. Tarantino’s dialogue is at its snappiest, and the soundtrack is a brilliant mashup of Ennio Morricone and Rick Ross that shouldn't work but somehow feels perfect. The action is stylized, bloody, and deeply satisfying—especially when the tables finally turn. THE CONS It’s long—clocking in at nearly three hours—and the pacing stutters a bit after the climactic "dinner scene." There’s a whole final act involving an Australian mining company that feels like Tarantino just wanted to cameo as a guy getting blown up. Also, the film is unapologetically brutal with its use of racial slurs and historical violence; it’s a stylistic choice that fits the "grindhouse" vibe, but it’s definitely not for the faint of heart or those looking for a subtle historical drama. THE VERDICT A "Guaranteed Banger" that turns one of the darkest chapters of history into a high-octane revenge fantasy. It’s a 9/10 because it’s bold, hilarious, and visually stunning. It’s the ultimate "cheer for the good guy" movie, even if the good guy has to walk through a literal ocean of blood to get his happy ending. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA During the infamous "smashed glass" dinner scene, Leonardo DiCaprio actually cut his hand on a real glass. Instead of stopping, he stayed in character, bleeding all over the table and using the injury to make the scene even more terrifying. Tarantino was so impressed he kept the take in the movie. Also, Jamie Foxx used his own horse, Cheetah, in the film because he’s a skilled rider in real life—meaning Django and his horse had "actual" chemistry. THE VIBE Like a velvet suit drenched in bourbon and gunpowder. It’s sophisticated, slightly unhinged, and tastes like sweet, cold revenge.
