⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Ladies First follows a group of elite female assassins, thieves, and intelligence operatives who get blackmailed into working together after a mission goes catastrophically sideways. Think Ocean’s Eleven after three vodkas and a nervous breakdown. Every member of the crew has their own agenda, nobody trusts each other, and half the runtime feels like somebody’s one sarcastic comment away from getting thrown out of a moving car. Underneath all the swagger though, it’s really about damaged women trying to survive in industries built by dangerous men who underestimated them. THE PROS The cast chemistry absolutely saves this from becoming another forgettable streaming “girlboss” factory product. The banter actually sounds like human beings speaking instead of Twitter captions glued together by committee. There’s a lot of sharp, dry humour, especially during the planning scenes where everyone seems permanently irritated with each other. The action is stylish without drowning itself in CGI sludge, and director Nia DaCosta keeps things moving at a proper pace. The film also deserves credit for letting its characters be messy, selfish, petty, and occasionally complete disasters instead of pretending they’re flawless empowerment robots. THE CONS It lands at a 7/10 because the plot can feel like it’s held together with chewing gum and panic. There are moments where characters magically know things purely because the screenplay needs the next twist to happen immediately. Some emotional arcs get rushed, especially in the second half, and a couple of villains are about as memorable as supermarket own-brand cereal. It misses the 8/10 mark because while the energy is fun, the story itself never fully reaches the level of cleverness it thinks it has. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. Funny, slick, chaotic entertainment carried heavily by charisma and chemistry. It’s not reinventing the heist-action genre, but it’s got enough personality to stop it feeling like another algorithm-generated “content drop.” Definitely one of those films where the cast looks like they’re having a much better time than most modern blockbusters, and honestly that counts for a lot these days. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Nia DaCosta reportedly banned overly choreographed “superhero posing” during fight scenes because she wanted the combat to feel scrappy, exhausted, and occasionally sloppy.• Several cast members trained together for weeks before filming purely to build believable “annoyed best mates” chemistry rather than polished military teamwork.• One extended car sequence had to be reshot after test audiences laughed at how aggressively one actress kept slamming doors during arguments. The production kept it in because it somehow became funnier every time.• Costume designers deliberately avoided matching colour palettes between the team members so they’d visually feel like people forced together rather than a polished comic-book squad.• Internally, parts of the crew reportedly referred to the film as “Mission: Impossible with emotional damage,” which honestly sums it up perfectly. THE VIBE Like arguing in the back of an Uber while carrying stolen diamonds and unresolved trauma. Stylish, loud, messy, and one bad decision away from total catastrophe.

THE SUMMARY
