⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Antoine Fuqua takes on the monumental task of chronicling the life of the King of Pop, from his rise with the Jackson 5 to his transformation into a global icon. The film stars Michael’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who looks and moves so much like his uncle it’s eerie. It covers the creative peaks—recording 'Thriller', the invention of the moonwalk, and the 'Bad' tour—while navigating the intense pressure of the spotlight and the complicated relationship with his father, Joe Jackson. It’s a sweeping, musical odyssey that tries to capture the man behind the sequined glove, spanning decades of pop culture history right up to his final rehearsals for 'This Is It'. THE PROS Jaafar Jackson is a revelation; this isn't just an impression, it’s a soul-deep performance that anchors the whole movie. The musical sequences are epic status, particularly the recreation of the 'Thriller' video and the Motown 25 performance—the energy is punchy and captures the magic of why the world stopped for him. Antoine Fuqua’s direction is quality, especially in the way he handles the massive stadium scenes. It’s an 8/10 because it doesn't shy away from the physical and emotional toll of Michael’s perfectionism, and Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson is a winner, bringing a terrifying but human complexity to the family patriarch. It’s a winner for Jaafar’s transformative performance and the incredible choreography. Go and watch it on the biggest screen possible for the 'Beat It' sequence—it’s quality filmmaking. He spent two years working with coaches to master his uncle’s specific vocal inflections and "gliding" movements before filming even started.• Family Secrets: Jaafar actually kept the news that he landed the role a secret from almost his entire family for a full year while he trained, wanting to make sure he could actually inhabit the role before the pressure of the Jackson legacy kicked in.• The Original Street: The production went for maximum authenticity for the 'Thriller' segment, filming on Union Pacific Avenue in Los Angeles—the exact same location where the original music video was shot in 1983.
