⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARYA wonderfully chaotic, fast-paced animated comedy that gives the long-running franchise a brilliantly fresh lease of life. Moving away from the familiar Gru timeline, this prequel lands a new tribe of Minions in the lawless landscape of 1920s Old Hollywood. Led by two creative misfits, James and Henry, the yellow crew accidentally disrupt a Western film set, instantly become silent movie icons, and move into massive mansions. But when "talkies" arrive and ruin their silent fame, they set out to make the ultimate monster movie, using a dark spellbook to summon an obsequious little demon named Goomi who promises to find them real creature features. THE PROSSetting the film in the golden age of cinema is a massive stroke of genius, letting director Pierre Coffin load the screen with brilliantly clever homages to Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and old-school monster flicks. Dropping Kevin, Stuart, and Bob for fresh leads like James and Henry gives the slapstick humor a much-needed shot of energy. Trey Parker steals the entire show voicing the pint-sized, Cthulhu-like demon Goomi, channeling an absolute masterclass of unhinged, Cartman-esque comedic delivery that will have both kids and adults laughing out loud. THE CONSThe film splits the tribe into two separate subplots, and the B-story involving leader Dick tracking down a useless, nerdy alien robot named Dort feels incredibly lightweight compared to the Hollywood chaos. While the animation pays beautiful tribute to early cinema grains and silent film framing early on, the massive, noisy monster showdown in the final act abandons all that unique style for a generic, modern blockbuster CGI scramble. THE VERDICTA great 8/10. It is easily the most creative, visually interesting, and genuinely funny entry in the franchise since the original Despicable Me. It comfortably secures an 8 because the 1920s Hollywood setting is a joy to watch, the movie parodies land perfectly, and it is packed with a proper amount of heart and artistic flair. It only misses out on a higher status due to that slightly disjointed robot subplot, but it is an absolute blast of a family film. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA• Classical Chords: Breaking a massive tradition for the series, this is the first installment where the soundtrack features a full classical score by John Powell, completely ditching the pop and rock needle drops used in the previous movies.• Masterful Voice: Franchise architect Pierre Coffin continues his absolute domination behind the microphone, individually voicing hundreds of distinct Minions for the film, including the main artistic duo James and Henry.• Famous Fan: Legendary filmmaker George Lucas makes a completely unexpected, hilarious live-action cameo appearance trapped inside a display case at a modern-day film history museum after being personally approached by the producers. THE VIBELike crashing a vintage black-and-white movie set with a pocket full of firecrackers and a massive bunch of bananas. It smells like old celluloid film, hot studio lights, and pure, unfiltered cartoon madness. Stylish, nostalgic, and proper funny.
