⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARYA raunchy Hulu comedy where a bizarre legal loophole forces the entire high school graduating class of 2008 back to the classroom in their mid-30s. Because a massive tornado cut their senior year short by two weeks, the government demands they return to North Meadows High to finish their missing credit hours. Jammed back into tiny desks alongside actual teenagers, the group faces a wave of midlife crises, unrequited teenage angst, and awkward run-ins with their old flames. THE PROSThe film boasts an absolute goldmine of indie comedy talent that manages to pull out a few genuine laughs from a messy script. Jo Firestone is easily the best part of the whole thing as Amelia, an overachiever who peaked in 2008 and is deeply traumatized that absolutely none of her former classmates remember who she is. Topher Grace puts in a brilliantly funny, unhinged performance as the drama teacher trying to force these deeply depressed 30-somethings to star in his terrible original play about a local serial killer. THE CONSWhile the high-concept premise is absolute genius on paper, the execution completely collapses under a flood of mean-spirited and lazy writing. The script constantly relies on incredibly crass, cheap shock-value jokes that completely miss the mark and leave a proper sour taste in your mouth. At a tight 98 minutes, the film is hopelessly overstuffed with distracting celebrity cameos that go absolutely nowhere, completely robbing the core cast of any meaningful character development or emotional payoff. THE VERDICTA flat 5/10. It is a wildly uneven high school comedy that trades clever nostalgia for cheap, raunchy gags. It scrapes a 5 purely because the central concept is a brilliant laugh and the supporting comedic cast do their absolute best to save the material. It misses a higher score because the pacing is totally frantic, the dialogue relies way too heavily on crude insults, and it ultimately feels like a massive wasted opportunity given the incredible talent on screen.
