Overview

Gym-freak brat Rocky falls in love with Rani, who comes from a well-educated Bengali family. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Rocky Randhawa is a loud, protein-shaking Punjabi lad from a wealthy confectionery family, while Rani Chatterjee is an intellectual, sari-clad Bengali news anchor. When they discover their grandparents had a secret, unrequited affair decades ago, the two team up to reunite the elders. Along the way, they fall for each other, but realizing their families are polar opposites, they decide to "switch" houses for three months to see if they can survive each other's relatives. It’s a battle of "Laddoos vs. Literature" as they try to break down patriarchal walls and bridge a massive cultural divide. THE PROS Ranveer Singh is a total win as Rocky; his "himbo" energy is quality comedy, but he brings a sincere heart to the role that makes you root for him. Alia Bhatt is a winner as Rani, balancing her sharp intellect with some epic status musical numbers. The chemistry between the leads is punchy and believable. It’s an 8/10 because Karan Johar finally tackles some heavier social themes—like toxic masculinity and gender roles—without losing the quality glitter and glamour of a big Bollywood production. The "Dola Re Dola" sequence featuring the men is pure quality and a massive win for breaking stereotypes. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because, at nearly three hours, the pacing can feel slightly sluggish in the middle act during the family "switch" sequences. Some of the social commentary, while sincere, can be a bit heavy-handed and quality-deficient in subtlety—leaning into caricatures of both Punjabi and Bengali cultures.
