Overview

Against the backdrop of 18th century England, a massive pox outbreak, and Jacobite uprising – Sir Chauncey Savage and Lady Savage blindly pursue a better life. It's not without a tinge of irony that their family name is the Savages, for this is a Savage House indeed, filled with duels, decadence, and bloodshed.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARYIn 18th-century England, the chaotic and completely broke Savage family are at rock bottom. They absolutely despise each other, their massive estate is literally falling apart, and polite society wants nothing to do with them. When they get word that a high-ranking Duke is coming to visit, they scramble to polish the silver and hire new staff to fake being posh, but their own violent and depraved habits quickly threaten to ruin the big night. THE PROSRichard E. Grant and Claire Foy are a brilliant comedic duo, playing against type as two properly repulsive, boorish aristocrats. They tackle the crude, pitch-black humor with absolute gusto and look like they are having the time of their lives being completely unhinged. The costume and production design are top-tier, capturing the filthy, mud-splattered reality of the period instead of the usual clean Hollywood version. THE CONSThe pacing is a massive slog. It sets up a fast-paced social satire but completely loses momentum in the middle, turning what should be a snappy comedy into an overstretched waiting game. The film leans so heavily into being gross and shocking—with subplots about rotting feet and bizarre bodily functions—that it forgets to actually write jokes, making the characters more annoying than interesting to watch. THE VERDICTA solid 6/10. It is a decent, incredibly dark period comedy that gets by on the sheer talent of its leading cast. It misses a higher score because the story gets bogged down in its own filth, slowing the pacing to a crawl and trading clever wit for simple shock value. It is worth a watch for Grant and Foy’s brilliant performances, but it won't be replacing films like The Favourite anytime soon.
