⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY A chilly, slow-burning Western thriller that traps a handful of dangerous characters in a frozen cabin during the American Civil War. The story centers on Ada, a young woman left completely alone to guard a remote Union outpost in the dead of winter following her father's death. Her quiet life is shattered when she finds a hidden stash of stolen gold, followed quickly by a desperate thief and a ruthless gang of outlaws disguised as Union soldiers. Outnumbered and trapped by the freezing weather, Ada has to play a dangerous game of deception to hide the loot and stay alive. THE PROS Mackenzie Foy is great here, shedding her child-actor roots to deliver a mature, gritty performance as a resourceful survivor who can hold her own against a cabin full of killers. Sean Bean is brilliant as the gang's polite but deeply menacing leader, Fiddler John, shifting from calm charm to terrifying violence in a split second. Director John Suits uses the freezing, bleak landscape to create a genuinely claustrophobic atmosphere, making the isolated cabin feel like a ticking time bomb where nobody trusts anyone. THE CONS The script pulls heavily from movies like The Hateful Eight, but it lacks that sharp, crackling dialogue, making the dialogue-heavy middle sections drag a bit. The pacing can feel sluggish during the setup, and a few secondary characters are left with very little to do other than look mean in the background. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It is a grim, tense, and well-acted indie Western that punches well above its weight class. It gets a 7 because the lead performances are top-tier and the bleak winter setting makes the survival stakes feel incredibly real. It misses out on a higher score because the plot beats are a bit predictable, but it is a sharp, low-budget thriller well worth a look. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Salt Fields: To replicate the brutal, snowy Oregon wilderness without freezing the cast, the crew filled a massive airplane hangar with tons of industrial salt to create the thick layers of fake snow.• Indie Budget: The film was shot on a tight schedule over just a few weeks, forcing the cast to rehearse their dialogue extensively beforehand to avoid wasting valuable daylight on the cold sets.• Career Pivot: This marks Mackenzie Foy’s first ever Western role, and she underwent weapons training to ensure she looked entirely natural handling period-accurate firearms on screen. THE VIBE Like sitting next to a dying fire in a drafty wooden cabin while a blizzard howls outside and a stranger watches you from across the room. It smells like wet wool, gunsmoke, frozen dirt, and cheap whiskey. Cold, tense, and gritty.
