Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY While the title might sound like a fresh release, this is actually a high-quality 2024 digital remaster and re-release of the 2016 Norwegian epic *Birkebeinerne*. Set in the year 1206, the story is based on the legendary true events that changed the course of Norway’s history. After the king is murdered, two brave warriors, Skjervald (Jakob Oftebro) and Torstein (Kristofer Hivju), must protect his infant heir, Håkon, from the treacherous Baglers. It’s a high-stakes survival mission across a brutal, frozen landscape where the only thing faster than the assassins are the skis on the warriors' feet. THE PROS This earns a 7/10 because it is a sincere and high-quality action film that trades standard horse chases for legendary, high-speed skiing battles. Kristofer Hivju is a total winner, bringing that rugged, charismatic energy he’s famous for to the role of a grizzled protector. The cinematography in this 2024 version is absolute quality, making the snowy mountains of Norway look both stunning and terrifyingly cold. It hits the 7/10 mark because the combat feels honest and visceral—axes, swords, and even sharpened ski poles are used in desperate, high-quality skirmishes that keep the tension high.
