⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY Tim Morris thinks he’s finally met the woman of his dreams. After a chance encounter at an airport, he strikes up a text-based romance and decides to take a leap of faith by inviting her to his company’s corporate retreat in Hawaii. The only problem? He accidentally invites the "Missy" from a nightmare blind date he had weeks prior. Trapped on an island with an unpredictable, chaotic, and borderline dangerous woman, Tim has to survive the weekend without losing his job or his mind. It’s a classic Adam Sandler-produced comedy (without the Sandler) that leans into the "cringe-factor" and relentless slapstick. THE PROS This is a 5/10 because Lauren Lapkus is a comedic tornado. She fully commits to the role of "Nightmare Missy," throwing herself into every bizarre physical gag and awkward line delivery with zero fear. It hits the mark as a "guilty pleasure" because it’s exactly what it says on the tin—it's loud, colorful, and occasionally funny in a "so bad it's good" way. It’s a winner for those nights when you’ve had a few drinks and just want to see David Spade get bullied by a woman who thinks she’s a professional psychic-ninja. The Hawaiian setting is beautiful, and the supporting cast, including Nick Swardson and Rob Schneider, do exactly what you’d expect them to do in a Happy Madison production. THE CONS It misses a higher rating because the humor is about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the kneecap. Most of the jokes rely on Lapkus being loud and "wacky" while Spade looks uncomfortable, which wears thin long before the ninety-minute mark. It settles at a 5 because the plot is paper-thin and follows the "Sandler Formula" to the letter—including the inevitable and unearned romantic turn in the final act. It’s a winner only if you have a high tolerance for cringe-comedy; for everyone else, it’s a series of increasingly frantic skits that don't quite add up to a coherent movie. THE VERDICT A solid 5/10. It is a frantic, hit-and-miss comedy that relies entirely on how much Lauren Lapkus you can handle in one sitting. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Cameo King: Vanilla Ice makes a cameo as himself in the film. He’s a frequent collaborator with the Happy Madison crew and reportedly spent his time on set teaching the cast how to "properly" act during the high-energy party scenes.• Casting Shuffle: David Spade and Lauren Lapkus had never worked together before this, but they reportedly hit it off immediately. Lapkus was encouraged to improvise most of her more unhinged moments, which often led to Spade’s genuine look of terror on screen.• Real Locations: Unlike some productions that use green screens, the film was shot entirely on location in Oahu, Hawaii. The resort featured is the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina, which was kept open during filming, leading to some real-life guests accidentally ending up in the background of some scenes. THE VIBE Like a bright blue cocktail with too much sugar. It smells like coconut suncream, cheap tequila, and desperation. It’s loud, messy, and slightly exhausting. It makes you want to double-check your contacts, avoid corporate retreats, and realize that "too much energy" is definitely a thing.
