⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Ramakant (Rajkummar Rao) is a man so stingy he’d probably try to haggle over the price of a free sample. Under pressure from his wife Shilpa (Sanya Malhotra), he forks over ₹4999 for a high-end toaster as a wedding gift. When the wedding is abruptly called off the next day, Ramakant doesn't see a tragedy—he sees a refund opportunity. His obsessive quest to get his appliance back spirals into a dark, chaotic vortex involving accidental murders, body disposal, and a very eccentric orphanage owner (Farah Khan). It’s a "small stakes turned deadly" caper where the body count rises faster than the bread. THE PROS Rajkummar Rao is a "Guaranteed Banger" in these "harassed everyman" roles. He plays the transition from a harmless miser to a panicked, body-burying mess with perfect comedic timing. The chemistry between him and Sanya Malhotra provides a grounded heart to the absurdity. The first half is legitimately hilarious, especially the scenes with Archana Puran Singh, who basically steals every frame she’s in. It’s a refreshingly weird premise that feels like a spiritual cousin to Lootcase—finding the humor in the absolute mundane. THE CONS The movie has a major "tonal identity crisis" in the second half. It starts as a breezy situational comedy and then suddenly decides it wants to be a gritty, dark thriller. The shift is jarring—one minute you’re laughing at a cheap gift, and the next, people are dying in ways that feel a bit too grim for the established vibe. The ending is particularly messy, trying to tie up five different plotlines with a bow that’s far too small. It’s a 6/10 because it overstays its welcome; what could have been a tight 90-minute riot becomes a 126-minute slog that runs out of steam before the toast pops. THE VERDICT A solid 6/10. It’s worth a watch on Netflix for the performances alone, but it’s not the "Masterpiece" it could have been with a tighter script. Also, keep an eye out for Farah Khan—director Vivek Daschaudhary cast her because of her real-life friendship with the couple, and she essentially just played a "crankier" version of herself. Fun fact: The "Animal" reference (where Ramakant tells the inspector to "awaken the animal inside") was a last-minute ad-lib because the actor playing the cop, Upendra Limaye, actually had a memorable role in the 2023 blockbuster Animal. THE VIBE Like a breakfast that goes horribly wrong. It starts with the smell of fresh toast and ends with the kitchen on fire and you wondering how you’re going to explain the mess to the neighbors.
