Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Forget the campy sequels that came before; John Hyams (son of legendary director Peter Hyams) reinvents the franchise as a bleak, industrial, and bone-crunching action thriller. When a group of terrorists takes over the Chernobyl nuclear reactor and threatens a global disaster, they reveal a secret weapon: a "Next Generation UniSol" (Andrei Arlovski) that is faster and more lethal than anything before. To stop the threat, the military reactivates a decommissioned Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), who must fight through a drug-hazed rehabilitation to face his old nemesis Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren) and the new monster in the reactor. THE PROS This earns its 8/10 and "Epic Status" because it is a high-quality masterclass in how to revive a "dead" franchise with sincere grit. The direction is absolute quality, swapping out flashy Hollywood lighting for a grey, industrial aesthetic that makes the violence feel honest and visceral. Van Damme gives a total winner of a performance; he’s weary, haunted, and barely speaks, letting his legendary physicality do the talking. The fight scenes are a total banger, particularly the long-take sequence where Luc clears a building—it’s a high-quality piece of choreography that puts most big-budget action flicks to shame. Dolph Lundgren is a legendary shout as a revived Andrew Scott, bringing a touch of unhinged madness that provides an absolute quality spark to the second act. THE CONS It misses a higher mark because the plot is a bit of a slow-roller in the beginning as the military politics play out. While the bleak look is high-quality, the relentless grey-on-grey color palette can feel a bit quality-deficient in terms of visual variety over a 90-minute sit. It lands an 8 because, despite being a legendary banger for action fans, it’s an honest "meat and potatoes" movie that doesn't offer much in the way of character depth outside of Luc’s internal struggle.
