    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Martin Ward (Edward Rowe) is a fisherman without a boat. Set in a Cornish village that’s slowly being swallowed by posh Londoners and "Airbnbs," Martin is a man out of time. He scours the shoreline for fish while his brother, Steven, uses their late father’s boat to take tourists on pleasure cruises. Tensions boil over when the picturesque cottage they grew up in is sold to a wealthy family who treat the village like a playground. It’s a gritty, monochrome look at the death of a traditional way of life and the simmering rage of the people left behind. THE PROS This is an honest masterpiece of style, and it hits an 8 because it looks like nothing else you’ve ever seen. Director Mark Jenkin shot the whole thing on a vintage 16mm camera and hand-processed the film, giving it a scratchy, flickering look that makes it feel like a lost relic from the 1940s. The sound design is a total highlight; everything is post-dubbed, creating a strange, hyper-real atmosphere where every footstep and clinking glass feels heavy and intentional. Edward Rowe gives an epic, glowering performance as Martin—he’s a man of few words, but his face tells the whole pained history of his community. It’s a smart, punchy film that handles the "locals vs. tourists" conflict with real bite. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the experimental style can feel like a bit of a slog if you aren’t prepared for how weird it is. It misses a higher mark because the plot is quite simple, and the aggressive editing—with flash-forwards and quick cuts—can be a head-scratcher for anyone expecting a standard drama. Some of the tourist characters are written as one-dimensional caricatures of "posh Londoners," which makes the conflict feel a bit less nuanced at times. While the short runtime is a plus, the ending moves so fast it can leave you feeling like a few more minutes of character breathing room would have made the final punch even harder. THE VERDICT 8/10. A raw, unique, and visually stunning piece of British cinema. It’s an epic result for independent film and a fair shout for the most original movie experience you'll have all year. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To get that distinctive look, the director used a 1970s Bolex camera that only holds about 30 seconds of film at a time, forcing him to be incredibly precise with every single shot.• Because the camera was so loud, the actors couldn't record live audio; every single line of dialogue and sound effect had to be meticulously recreated and dubbed over the footage after it was processed.• The "scratches" and "flares" you see on screen aren't digital effects; they are actual physical marks caused by the hand-processing of the film in a laboratory that the director set up in his own home. THE VIBE Like a cold wind off the Atlantic. It smells of salt spray, diesel, and the metallic tang of a wet fishing net.
