Overview

Alex Cross is a brilliant but flawed homicide detective and full of contradictions. A doting father and family man, Cross is single-minded to the point of obsession when he hunts killers. He is desperate for love, but his wife’s murder has left him too damaged to receive it.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 ​ THE SUMMARY ​Alex Cross is back, and this time he’s traded the big screen for a gritty, long-form Prime Video residency. Aldis Hodge steps into the shoes of James Patterson’s legendary forensic psychologist, hunting a serial killer who isn't just obsessed with murder, but with recreating famous crime scenes like a twisted fanboy. It’s a cat-and-mouse game set in D.C. where the "mouse" has a Ph.D. and a lot of emotional baggage from his wife's unsolved murder. ​ THE PROS ​Aldis Hodge is the absolute highlight—he brings a "drip" to the detective world that we haven't seen before (the man loves a good turtleneck). He manages to be both physically intimidating and emotionally fragile, which is a tough tightrope to walk. The chemistry between him and his partner, John Sampson (Isaiah Mustafa), feels like a genuine brotherhood rather than just a "cop duo" trope. It deals with modern D.C. issues with more nuance than your average procedural, making the city feel like a living, breathing part of the story. ​ THE CONS ​The mystery itself can get a bit "procedural-by-numbers." If you’ve watched Mindhunter or even Criminal Minds, some of the psychological profiling feels like stuff we’ve seen a dozen times. The villain’s grand plan is a little convoluted and relies on a few too many "lucky breaks" to keep the plot moving. Also, the pacing slows down significantly in the middle episodes, turning what could have been a tight thriller into a bit of a marathon. ​ THE VERDICT ​It’s a solid, stylish addition to the "dads-who-hunt-people" genre on Prime. It doesn’t quite hit the "Guaranteed Banger" status of Reacher, but it’s a massive upgrade from previous Alex Cross adaptations. If you like your detectives smart, well-dressed, and slightly traumatized, this is a perfect weekend binge. ​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA ​ Aldis Hodge is a man of many talents; when he’s not catching fictional serial killers, he’s a professional watchmaker and horologist who designs his own luxury timepieces. Also, this series marks the third major live-action version of the character, following in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry. ​ THE VIBE ​ Like a high-end leather jacket—cool, classic, and looks great in the dark, even if it feels a little stiff in a few places.
