Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY Moving the cutthroat action from New York high schools to the Greek life of Manchester College in Washington, D.C., this 2024 Prime Video reboot attempts to modernize the 1999 cult classic. Step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess) are the apex predators of their elite social circle, engaging in a pained game of seduction and sabotage to preserve their power. When a hazing incident threatens their entire sorority and fraternity system, they set their sights on Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), the daughter of the U.S. Vice President. It’s a pained attempt at a "sexy" campus romp that trades the original's sharp bite for soap-opera tropes. THE PROS This series hits a 4 primarily because of the breakout performance from Savannah Lee Smith as Annie; she brings a sincere and grounded energy that feels like a fair shout for the most honest acting in the show. The inclusion of Sean Patrick Thomas—who played Ronald in the original film—as Professor Chadwick is an amazing and smart nod for the long-time fans on the site. It’s a great series for those who just want "background noise" melodrama, with the Washington D.C. setting providing a fair shout of stylish, pained locations that make the production look expensive. The chemistry between Blaise and Scott provides a sincere, if pained, look at secret relationships within the high-stakes Greek system. THE CONS It stays at a 4 because the writing can feel like a massive slog, lacking the "sultry sinisterness" that made the film a sincere landmark. It misses a higher mark because Lucien and Caroline feel a pained bit too stoic, with an honest head-scratcher of a dynamic that lacks any real intimacy or charisma. The dialogue is often a pained bit of a slog, filled with buzzwords that feel like an honest attempt to sound "Gen Z" but come across as a fair shout for cringey. Most frustratingly, the show shies away from any real ruthlessness, making the "cruel" part of the title feel like an honest head-scratcher. After failing to hit the charts, the series was officially canceled in March 2025, leaving fans with a pained cliffhanger that will never be resolved. THE VERDICT 4/10. A pained, toothless reboot that misses the mark. It’s an amazing result for anyone who wants a "lite" version of *Gossip Girl*, but for fans of the original, it’s an honest slog that’s better left on the shelf.
