Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY An adaptation of the acclaimed British limited series, Day One follows the immediate aftermath of a global catastrophic event that wipes out modern infrastructure in an instant. Set in a tightly-knit London block, the story focuses on a group of ordinary neighbors who are forced to band together when the lights go out and stay out. With no news, no transport, and a growing sense of dread about what’s happening outside their city, the residents must decide how to organize their new world. It’s a pained, claustrophobic look at how quickly society can pivot from "polite neighbor" to "survivalist" when the taps run dry. THE PROS This is a great series because it avoids the typical "apocalypse" clichés and stays honest to the small, human moments of a crisis. It hits an 8 because the tension is amazing—the show doesn't need monsters or massive explosions to make your heart race; just the sight of a dwindling water bottle is a total highlight. The cast delivers sincere performances that make the neighborhood feel real, especially the pained realization that their old lives are gone for good. It’s a smart, grounded drama that focuses on the ethics of survival, and the pacing in the first few episodes is a fair shout for the most gripping TV of the year. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the lack of answers about the "event" can feel like a bit of a slog for viewers who want a more traditional sci-fi explanation. It misses a higher mark because some of the character conflicts feel like an honest head-scratcher, with people holding onto petty grudges even when the world is ending. The ending is quite abrupt, which is a sincere reflection of the story’s themes but might leave some fans feeling a bit pained and wanting more closure. While the atmosphere is amazing, the grey, bleak look of a powerless London can be a heavy watch if you're not in the right headspace. THE VERDICT 8/10. A tense, smart, and deeply human survival story. It’s amazing for anyone who liked *Years and Years* or *Containment* and wants a thriller that hits close to home. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To make the "dark London" scenes look honest, the production used minimal artificial lighting, relying on actual candlelight and lanterns to film the night sequences in the apartment block.• The show was filmed during a real London heatwave, which the actors said helped them portray the pained, dehydrated, and exhausted state of characters who have no access to running water.• The creators consulted with real-world disaster relief experts to map out exactly how a modern city block would realistically deteriorate over the course of the first few weeks without power or supplies.
