⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Maya Lopez is a deaf, amputee assassin who has spent her life being manipulated by Kingpin. After trying to put a bullet in his head in Hawkeye, she runs back to her hometown in Oklahoma to lie low. But you can't just quit the mob and go back to small-town life without bringing the heat with you. It’s a gritty, street-level story that tries to trade the usual superhero spandex for a bloodier, more grounded look at family roots and crime. THE PROS Alaqua Cox is great as Maya. She’s tough, silent, and doesn't need dialogue to show she’s about to break someone’s jaw. The fight scenes are the real highlight—they’re brutal, messy, and feel much more dangerous than the usual Marvel stuff. There’s a scene with Daredevil early on that is easily the best part of the whole series. It’s also refreshing to see a show lean so heavily into Choctaw culture and history without it feeling like a hollow gimmick; it actually feels like a part of who Maya is. THE CONS It’s a 6/10 because it feels like a bit of a mess. The pacing is all over the place, and for a show that was marketed as "gritty," it spends a lot of time on slow family drama that doesn't always land. The ending is a total head-scratcher, too—it shifts from a street-level crime thriller into some weird, mystical territory that feels completely disconnected from the rest of the show. It misses the mark because it can't decide if it wants to be a brutal mob story or a spiritual journey. THE VERDICT A 6/10. It has some fantastic action and a strong lead, but the story just isn't there to back it up. It’s worth watching for the fight scenes and Kingpin’s presence, but it feels more like a bridge to the next Daredevil show than its own thing. It’s okay, but it won't be one you’re rushing to rewatch. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Real Deal: Alaqua Cox is actually deaf and an amputee in real life. This was her first-ever acting role when she started in Hawkeye, and she did most of her own stunts in Echo to make the action look as real as possible.• First of a Kind: This was the first Marvel show to get a TV-MA rating (the TV equivalent of an R-rating). It was a deliberate move to make the world of Kingpin feel as nasty and violent as the old Netflix shows.• Language Lessons: To keep things accurate, many of the cast and crew had to learn American Sign Language (ASL) and work closely with the Choctaw Nation. The show even features a scene with a traditional Choctaw game called stickball, which was filmed using real players from the community. THE VIBE Like a dusty Oklahoma road at sunset, the smell of gunpowder and old grease, and the silence of a town that knows too many secrets. it’s heavy, violent, and a bit disjointed. It makes you want to go for a ride on a motorbike, ignore your phone, and hope your past doesn't come knocking.
