⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Take the claustrophobia of a submarine, add a dash of the apocalypse, and you get Fear the Walking Dead: Dead in the Water (2022). This digital tie-in series serves as a prequel, showing us exactly how the crew of the USS Pennsylvania went from elite naval officers to a floating buffet for the undead. We follow Jason Riley, a weapons officer who has to navigate the tight corridors of a nuclear sub while his crewmates start turning into "walkers." It is a high-stakes, underwater nightmare where "nowhere to run" is taken quite literally. THE PROS The setting is a total win; using a nuclear submarine creates a sense of dread that the main shows often lack with their wide-open forests. The close-quarters combat is the business—it makes every encounter with a single zombie feel like a genuine belter because there’s zero room to move. It’s a witty-ly sharp way to give more backstory to a character we already knew from the main show, making his eventually villainous turn feel more authentic. For a short-form series, the tension is 100% authentic and doesn't waste time with unnecessary fluff. THE CONS It misses the 7 or 8 mark because it feels a bit wet in the budget department. You can tell they were limited by the sets, and some of the "chaos" happens off-screen, which is a bit of a head-scratcher when you want to see the full collapse. It’s a Languid Burn in all the wrong ways during the dialogue scenes, which can feel a bit repetitive for anyone who has seen the "soldier choosing duty over family" trope a thousand times. It’s total garbage that it’s so short; just as you’re getting into the groove of the sub-survival, it’s over, leaving the vault feeling a bit empty. THE VERDICT A 6/10. It is a sincere effort to do something different with the franchise, but it’s more of a snack than a meal. It isn’t an 8 or 9/10 because it lacks the "epic" scale and deep character development needed to be a standalone classic. If you’re a completionist for the 900+ archive of Walking Dead lore, it’s a total win, but for a casual viewer, it might feel a bit like a "been there, seen that" situation. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Set Recycling: To save on costs, many of the submarine interiors were witty-ly repurposed from other naval dramas. It’s a 100% authentic way to make a low-budget web series look like a big-budget production, even if the "engine room" looks a bit like a boiler cupboard.• Riley's Return: Nick Stahl, who plays Riley, had to spend hours in a tiny, cramped bunk to get into the mindset of a submariner. He witty-ly remarked that the smell of the fake blood and the tight spaces made the "fear" in his performance very sincere.• Nuclear Plot: The show witty-ly explains how the sub ended up in Texas for the main series. It was a sincere move to tie the spin-off back to the mothership, ensuring that fans of the "End is the Beginning" arc got the closure they were looking for.
