Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10​ THE SUMMARY ​Welcome to a world where civilisation has collapsed, water is worth more than gold, and solving problems usually involves exploding someone from the inside out. Fist of the North Star: Hokuto no Ken follows Kenshiro, a wandering martial artist and part-time angel of death, as he roams a Mad Max-style wasteland delivering brutal justice with his deadly Hokuto Shinken technique. It’s a simple setup—bad guys do bad things, Kenshiro makes them deeply regret it—but it builds into something surprisingly emotional beneath all the shattered skulls.​ THE PROS ​Kenshiro is an all-time icon. Calm, stoic, and absolutely lethal, he’s the blueprint for half the anime protagonists that came after him. The action is ridiculous in the best way—over-the-top, violent, and somehow still satisfying every single time someone says “You are already dead.” There’s also more heart here than you’d expect, with tragic backstories and themes of survival, loyalty, and honour woven into the chaos. And stylistically, it just drips 80s anime energy.​ THE CONS ​It’s definitely a product of its time. The pacing can drag, especially with repetitive “new villain of the week” arcs, and the animation hasn’t aged gracefully in places. The structure can feel formulaic—Kenshiro shows up, villain monologues, villain explodes—and if you’re not bought into the vibe early, it might start to feel a bit samey. Also, the extreme violence won’t be for everyone.​ THE VERDICT ​A cult classic that earns its reputation. It’s rough around the edges, but the influence it’s had on anime and pop culture is undeniable. If you can get past the dated elements, there’s a legendary story here with one of the coolest protagonists ever put on screen.​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA ​ The famous line “You are already dead” (“Omae wa mou shindeiru”) became a global meme decades after the show first aired. Also, Kenshiro’s design was heavily inspired by a mix of Bruce Lee’s philosophy and Sylvester Stallone’s physique—basically calm wisdom with absolute unit energy.​ THE VIBE ​ Like wandering through a post-apocalyptic desert with a silent bodyguard who only speaks to inform people they’re about to die. Brutal, stylish, and weirdly poetic.
