Overview

Mark Grayson is a normal teenager except for the fact that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet. Shortly after his seventeenth birthday, Mark begins to develop powers of his own and enters into his father's tutelage.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10​ THE SUMMARY Think Superman, but if Clark Kent’s dad was a cosmic colonizer with zero chill and a penchant for "tough love" that involves leveling city blocks. Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a teenager who finally gets his powers only to realize that being a hero is less about wearing a cool suit and more about getting the absolute stuffing beaten out of you by your own family. It’s a brightly colored, R-rated emotional wrecking ball.​ THE PROS The stakes are terrifyingly real. Unlike most superhero shows where "collateral damage" is just dusty rubble, here it’s visceral and haunting. The voice cast is literal insanity—Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons bring a weight to the dialogue that makes the heavy scenes feel like a punch to the gut. It subverts every trope you’re bored of, and the animation in the big fights is basically a masterclass in how to make a cartoon feel genuinely dangerous.​ THE CONS The wait between seasons is long enough to make you age like a Viltrumite. Also, the pacing in the middle stretches can get a bit bogged down in side-plots that feel like distractions from the "holy crap, the world is ending" main course. Plus, it’s so gory that if you’re squeamish, you’ll spend half the runtime looking at your feet.​ THE VERDICT It’s the best "deconstruction" of superheroes since The Boys, but with more heart and much better flying sequences. If you want a show that respects your intelligence while also traumatizing you with daddy issues and orbital lasers, this is the one. Just don't get too attached to anyone with a pulse.​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Robert Kirkman (the creator) loves a meta-moment: the voice cast is stuffed with The Walking Dead alumni, including Steven Yeun, Ross Marquand, and Khary Payton. Also, the iconic "Think, Mark!" meme from the show actually changed the line from the comics, which was originally just "Think!"—apparently, adding the name made it 100% more menacing for the internet.​ THE VIBE Like a Saturday morning cartoon that grew up, got a cynical college degree, and decided to show you exactly what happens when a superhuman hits a skyscraper.
