Overview

When Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life, he discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) is a mild-mannered gift shop employee at a London museum who suffers from blackouts and memories of another life. He soon discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with Marc Spector, a hardened mercenary. As their enemies close in, Steven and Marc must navigate their complex identities while being thrust into a deadly mystery involving the powerful gods of Egypt. As the avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon, they become Moon Knight—a hooded vigilante caught in a war to stop a cult leader from unleashing an ancient judgment upon the world. THE PROS Oscar Isaac is a total highlight here, putting in an honest shift by playing two distinct characters who often argue with each other in the same scene. It hits an 8 because the show isn't afraid to get weird and psychological, moving away from the standard superhero formula to explore mental health and ancient mythology. The costume design for Moon Knight and the Mr. Knight persona is epic, looking sharp and unique against the desert backdrops. The episode set in the asylum is a masterclass in tension and was a fair shout for the most creative hour of TV in the Marvel lineup. It feels standalone and grounded in its own dark corner, which is a nice change of pace. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the heavy use of CGI in the final battle feels like a bit of a slog, taking away from the gritty, personal struggle established earlier. It misses a higher mark because the pacing can be a head-scratcher; sometimes it feels like a fast-paced treasure hunt, and other times it slows down so much you lose the momentum. The choice to "black out" during some of the biggest fight scenes—while clever for the story—can feel a bit like a letdown when you actually want to see the action. While the Egyptian mythology is cool, some of the supporting characters feel a bit thin compared to the deep dive we get into Marc and Steven’s heads. THE VERDICT 8/10. A dark, smart, and trippy ride that stands out from the crowd. It’s an honest win for fans who want something more mature and character-driven, and a fair shout for one of the best solo debuts in years. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To make the two personalities feel different, Oscar Isaac used an exaggerated London "Estuary" accent for Steven and his natural American accent for Marc; he even had his own brother, Michael Hernandez, act as his body double during scenes where the two characters interact.• The show's crew actually built a massive, detailed set for the Egyptian tomb, which was so realistic that the actors reportedly got lost inside the tunnels while filming.• In a nod to the character's comic book history, QR codes were hidden in the background of several episodes; if viewers scanned them with their phones, they were taken to a website where they could read free Moon Knight digital comics. THE VIBE Like a flashlight flickering in an ancient tomb. It smells of old sand, expensive linen, and the metallic tang of a crescent blade.
