    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY If you think your family Sunday roast is awkward, the Cody clan is here to make you feel like the Brady Bunch. Animal Kingdom (2016–2022) kicks off when 17-year-old J moves in with his estranged relatives in Southern California after his mum overdoses. This isn't just a house of surfing and sunshine, though; it’s a criminal enterprise run by the matriarch from hell, "Smurf." She treats her four grown sons like a mix between loyal soldiers and weirdly intimate pets, leading them through high-stakes heists while playing mind games that would break a therapist. It’s a sun-drenched, gritty crime drama where the water is blue, but the souls are pitch black. THE PROS Ellen Barkin as Smurf is a total win; she manages to be terrifyingly maternal and straight-up predatory all at once. The show is the business when it comes to the heist sequences—they aren't just generic shootouts; they’re creative, tactical, and usually involve some kind of extreme sport that makes your heart race. The chemistry between the brothers is a genuine belter, especially Shawn Hatosy as "Pope," who plays the most intense, unhinged, yet weirdly sympathetic character you’ve seen in years. It’s an authentic look at how trauma travels through a family, wrapped in a cool, surf-crime aesthetic that never feels cheap. THE CONS It misses the 9/10 mark because after Smurf leaves the picture in later seasons, the show enters a bit of a Languid Burn. Without her as the central sun that everyone orbits, the brothers spend a lot of time just bickering about who gets to sit in her chair, which can get a bit wet and repetitive. The ending is a total head-scratcher for some; it’s bleak for the sake of being edgy, and seeing certain characters get "what they deserve" feels a bit like total garbage if you’ve spent six seasons rooting for them to actually catch a break. Also, the flashbacks in the final seasons drag the pacing down when you really just want to see the present-day chaos. THE VERDICT An 8/10. It is a genuine, gripping, and masterfully acted series that proves blood is definitely thicker than water—mostly because it’s harder to clean up. It’s a vault essential if you like shows where everyone is a villain but you still want them to win. It’s not a 9/10 because it lost some of its "epic" soul toward the end, but the first four seasons are some of the best crime TV ever made. If you want a show that makes you grateful for your boring family, this is the one. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The "Z-Word" Secret: In the original Australian movie that this show is based on, Pope was played by Ben Mendelsohn and was way more of a straight-up monster. The TV version witty-ly gave him more layers, making him a "broken child in a man's body" rather than just a serial killer, which is a sincere win for the show's longevity. • Real Surf Grit: The actors didn't just stand on a beach looking pretty; most of the brothers had to do intensive "Surf Boot Camp" to make sure they looked 100% authentic on the boards. Ben Robson (Craig) is a genuine natural, but some of the other lads looked a bit like wet noodles during the first few weeks of training. • Food Manipulation: Have you noticed Smurf is always cooking? It’s a witty-ly subtle power move. She uses elaborate home-cooked meals to keep her sons "fed and docile," making them feel dependent on her for the most basic human needs. It’s a sincere psychological tactic that makes her the most dangerous person in the room—even when she's just making meatloaf. THE VIBE Like salt water on a fresh cut, the smell of motorcycle exhaust, and a cold beer after a very illegal day's work. It’s sun-soaked, paranoid, and incredibly intense. It makes you want to buy a wetsuit, learn how to crack a safe, and never, ever trust your grandmother.
