Overview

This drama follows Fan Changyu, a butcher’s daughter, and Xie Zheng, a fallen noble seeking revenge. Their fake marriage turns into true love, but war tears them apart.     ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Fan Changyu (Tian Xiwei) is a bold, practical butcher’s daughter just trying to keep her family’s meat shop afloat in a small town. Her life takes a sharp turn when she finds an injured man buried in the snow. He’s actually Xie Zheng (Zhang Linghe), a disgraced marquis on a secret quest for revenge, but he hides his identity and enters a marriage of convenience to help Changyu protect her home from greedy relatives. What starts as a fake alliance in a quiet village eventually explodes into a high-stakes war, forcing Changyu to trade her butcher’s knife for a general’s blade to find her husband and save their country. THE PROS This is a great series because it flips the typical "damsel in distress" trope on its head. It hits an 8 because Tian Xiwei is amazing as a female lead who is physically strong, blunt, and completely honest about her goals. The chemistry between the leads is a total highlight; watching a brooding, fallen noble adapt to being a "house husband" for a pig butcher provides some of the most sincere and funny moments in recent C-drama history. The production quality is top-tier, using natural lighting and beautiful locations in Zhejiang to make the world feel lived-in and real rather than like a sterile studio set. It’s a smart, slow-burn romance that pays off with epic battlefield sequences that feel pained and heavy. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the shift from small-town romance to complex palace politics in the second half can feel like a bit of a slog. It misses a higher mark because some of the war logic is an honest head-scratcher—especially when Changyu suddenly becomes a master soldier capable of taking down seasoned veterans with ease. The 40-episode length means a few of the middle subplots drag on, and some of the villains can feel a bit one-dimensional in their pursuit of power. While the visuals are stunning, the pacing slows down quite a bit once the couple is separated, which might test the patience of fans who were mainly here for the domestic "fake marriage" vibes. THE VERDICT 8/10. A gorgeous, refreshing, and emotionally powerful historical drama. It’s amazing for anyone who wants a strong female lead and a romance that actually feels like a partnership. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To make the butchering scenes look honest, Tian Xiwei actually took lessons from a professional butcher to learn how to handle the heavy knives and carry out the movements of the trade naturally.• Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei’s chemistry was so strong on set that the director, Zeng Qingjie, allowed them to improvise many of their smaller "bickering" moments to make the relationship feel more sincere.• The "jade hairpin" that triggers the whole story is a real piece of craftsmanship designed specifically for the show, featuring intricate patterns that are meant to symbolize the "hidden nobility" of the characters. THE VIBE Like a hot meal on a snowy night. It smells of wood smoke, fresh herbs, and the metallic tang of a sharpened butcher’s blade.
