⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Tom Ripley is a grifter scraping by in 1960s New York until a wealthy industrialist hires him to travel to Italy and convince his trust-fund son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home. Once Tom tastes the sun-drenched, high-class lifestyle of the Amalfi Coast, his mission shifts from retrieval to replacement. This isn't the vibrant, colorful Italy you’re used to; it’s a monochrome world of shadows and cold ambition where Tom meticulously weaves a web of forgery and murder to steal a life that was never his. THE PROS This is a 9/10 because it is a visual masterpiece. Filmed entirely in high-contrast black and white, every frame looks like a fine-art photograph. Andrew Scott is unsettlingly perfect as Ripley—he plays him not as a charming socialite, but as a calculated, slightly creepy predator who is constantly calculating his next move. The pacing is patient and deliberate, allowing the tension to build through small, mechanical details like the lugging of a heavy corpse or the forging of a signature. It hits Epic status because it redefines a well-known story into something that feels like a classic noir film from the era it depicts. THE CONS It misses a 10/10 because the deliberate "slow-burn" pace might be a bit too glacial for some. There are long sequences with almost no dialogue where we just watch Tom struggle with the logistics of his crimes, which is fascinating but can test your patience if you’re looking for a fast-paced thriller. It settles at a 9 because while Andrew Scott is brilliant, some may find his version of Tom almost too cold to fully invest in compared to more charismatic versions of the character. THE VERDICT A massive 9/10. It’s a sophisticated, gorgeous, and deeply chilling series that proves there is still fresh blood to be found in classic stories. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Artistic Eye: Director Steven Zaillian chose black and white not just for style, but because the edition of the "Talented Mr. Ripley" book he owned had a monochrome cover. He felt that the story was always meant to be seen in high contrast to match Tom’s cold perspective.• Animal Actors: The cat that features heavily in the Italian apartment scenes became a fan favorite. The feline was so well-trained that it managed to hit its marks perfectly, often staring directly into the camera to add to the unnerving atmosphere of Tom's hideout.• Location Work: The production visited over 200 locations across Italy to find spots that hadn't been modernized. They spent a significant amount of time in Atrani, a tiny village on the Amalfi Coast that had the perfect "frozen in time" look for the 1960s setting. THE VIBE Like a cold marble floor under bare feet. It smells like expensive cigarettes, old ink, and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s elegant, silent, and incredibly dangerous. It makes you want to buy a typewriter, move to Italy, and realize that a lie is only as good as the person telling it.
