    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Leanne (Sheridan Smith) is a cashier at a flickering Liverpool casino, barely keeping her family afloat while caring for a grandmother with dementia. Faced with the crushing reality of losing her home, she starts skimming from the safe, only to discover her manager, Matty (Michael Socha), is running the exact same hustle. Their secret binds them together, but they’ve picked a dangerous time to rob the place; local gangsters are using the casino to wash drug money, and the police are starting to poke around the books. It’s a claustrophobic study of two people trapped by circumstance and the frantic choices they make to survive. THE PROS Sheridan Smith is at the top of her game here, delivering a performance that is stoic, smart, and pained in all the right places. It hits a 9 because the writing from Tony Schumacher is razor-sharp and entirely honest about the weight of debt and addiction. Michael Socha is a highlight as Matty, bringing a jittery, desperate energy that makes every scene feel like a ticking bomb. The show is a fantastic "state-of-the-nation" piece that uses the flashy casino setting as a contrast to the grey, gritty reality of the characters' lives outside. It’s a gripping drama that keeps the tension high without losing its human heart, making you root for the "thieves" from the first five minutes. THE CONS It stays at a 9 because the unrelenting atmosphere can feel a bit of a slog if you aren’t ready for a heavy social thriller. It misses a perfect score because a few of the secondary detective subplots feel a bit standard, occasionally pulling focus from the more visceral struggle between Leanne and Matty. While the pacing is confident, some of the coincidences that keep the plot moving might be a head-scratcher for viewers who prefer a more grounded, slow-burn realism. It’s a heavy ride, and the sheer level of desperation can leave you feeling a bit drained by the end of a binge. THE VERDICT 9/10. A sharp, pained, and intelligently made British thriller. It’s a massive result for Sheridan Smith and a mandatory watch for anyone who wants a story that prioritizes human grit over flashy explosions.
