⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Welcome back to Ballarat in 1959, where the tea is always brewing and the autopsies are always curious. *The Doctor Blake Mysteries* (2013–2017) follows Dr. Lucien Blake (Craig McLachlan), who returns to his Australian hometown after thirty years to take over his late father’s medical practice and police surgeon duties. Traumatized by his service in WWII and the loss of his family in Singapore, Blake uses his eccentric brilliance and emerging forensic science to solve the town's most baffling murders. By April 2026, it is officially the "King of Aussie Period Mystery," though its legacy is as complicated as one of Lucien’s cold cases. THE PROS Craig McLachlan is a total win; he brings a sincere, haunted charm to Dr. Blake, balancing the character’s "mad scientist" energy with a deeply felt human sadness. Nadine Garner as Jean Beazley is the business—she is the literal spine of the show, evolving from a traditional housekeeper into Lucien’s partner in every sense of the word. The show’s biggest win is its atmospheric 1950s production design; Ballarat feels like a living, breathing character in the 900+ archive, full of post-war tension and small-town secrets. The "will-they-won't-they" tension between Lucien and Jean is a sincere slow-burn that pays off beautifully in the telefilm finale.
