⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Lady Cornelia Locke, an aristocratic Englishwoman, arrives in the American West in 1890 with a bag full of cash and a heart full of revenge. She’s looking for the man she holds responsible for the death of her son, but she quickly realizes the frontier is a butcher’s shop for the unprepared. She crosses paths with Eli Whipp, a retired Pawnee scout with his own heavy history, and the two form an unlikely alliance. It’s a sweeping, brutal, and breathtakingly beautiful Western that explores the bloody birth of a nation and the high cost of holding onto your humanity in a lawless land. THE PROS This is a 9/10 because it’s a cinematic masterpiece disguised as a TV show. Emily Blunt is a force of nature as Cornelia, evolving from a delicate outsider into a lethal survivor without losing her grace. Chaske Spencer is the perfect foil; his quiet, stoic performance says more than a thousand pages of dialogue. The cinematography is staggering—the wide-open plains look like oil paintings, but they hide a violence that is sudden and visceral. It hits Epic status because it manages to be both a grand, romantic adventure and a gut-wrenching look at the trauma of the frontier. THE CONS It misses the 10/10 mark because the plot is a bit of a labyrinth. There are a lot of flashbacks and interconnected characters that can be confusing if you aren't glued to the screen. It settles at a 9 because the dialogue, while poetic, occasionally slips into being a bit too theatrical for the rugged setting, making some of the villains feel a bit like stage characters rather than real people. THE VERDICT A massive 9/10. It is one of the most beautiful and brutal Westerns ever filmed, feeling like a love letter to the genre while simultaneously tearing it apart. It isn't a 10 because of the dense, sometimes puzzling narrative structure, but for the acting and visuals alone, it’s a total winner. If you want a story that hits like a gut-punch but looks like a dream, this is the one.
