⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Spanning half a century in a conservative South American country, this eight-episode saga follows three generations of women—Clara, Blanca, and Alba—within the Trueba family. The story centers on the volatile Esteban Trueba (Alfonso Herrera), a man whose rise to power as a ruthless landowner is mirrored by his pained obsession with his clairvoyant wife, Clara (Nicole Wallace/Dolores Fonzi). As the family navigates personal betrayals, political upheaval, and class warfare, Clara’s supernatural premonitions provide a visceral backdrop to the country’s descent into a brutal military dictatorship. THE PROS This is a visually lush production that finally gives the source material the Spanish-language roots it deserves. It hits a 6 because the casting of Nicole Wallace and Dolores Fonzi as Clara at different stages of her life is a stroke of brilliance; they both capture her ethereal, pained detachment with a grace that feels entirely human. Alfonso Herrera is equally impressive, portraying Esteban not as a cartoon villain, but as a man whose pained insecurities drive his most visceral and violent acts. The series does a fantastic job of world-building, making the sprawl of the Trueba estate feel like a living, breathing character that evolves alongside the family’s fortunes. THE CONS It stays at a 6 because the pacing can feel like a bit of a slog, especially as the plot tries to cram fifty years of history into just eight episodes.
