⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The Other Bennet Sister takes the dusty “quiet side character” from Pride and Prejudice and finally asks the obvious question: what if Mary Bennet was actually the most interesting person in the room the whole time? The series follows the overlooked middle Bennet sister trying to carve out an identity while surrounded by louder siblings, suffocating expectations, and enough Regency-era social politics to make modern office drama look relaxing. Instead of chasing fairy-tale romance, Mary stumbles through awkward self-discovery, intellectual frustration, and the horrifying experience of realising adulthood doesn’t magically solve your insecurities. THE PROS The writing is properly sharp. Not in that smug “look how clever we are adapting Austen” way either—it genuinely understands awkwardness, loneliness, and feeling invisible inside your own family. Ella Bruccoleri is brilliant as Mary, playing her with this painfully relatable mix of intelligence, insecurity, bitterness, and desperate hopefulness. You spend half the series wanting to hug her and the other half wanting to tell her to stop overthinking literally everything. The humour lands beautifully too, especially the dry family interactions where everybody’s quietly judging one another through forced politeness. Visually, it’s gorgeous without becoming one of those sterile costume dramas where every room looks like a furniture catalogue. There’s actual warmth and chaos underneath the corsets. THE CONS It lands at an 8/10 because the pacing occasionally wanders during some of the slower romantic subplots. A few side characters also feel more interesting than the screen time they’re given, particularly when the series shifts focus away from Mary’s internal struggles. It misses the 9/10 mark because while emotionally intelligent and beautifully acted, it never quite reaches the devastating emotional depth of the absolute top-tier literary adaptations. THE VERDICT An 8/10. Funny, bittersweet, thoughtful television that understands being “the forgotten one” far more deeply than expected. Instead of turning Mary into some flawless modern heroine trapped in the past, the show wisely lets her remain awkward, difficult, insecure, and human. That honesty is exactly why it works. A proper cosy-drama triumph with enough emotional bite to stop it becoming just another fancy-bonnet period piece. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The writers reportedly worked hard to avoid turning Mary into a “secret genius everyone overlooked,” wanting her growth to feel earned rather than magically revealed overnight.• Ella Bruccoleri intentionally studied people who apologise before speaking in group conversations to shape Mary’s nervous social energy. Painfully accurate research, frankly.• Costume designers subtly dressed Mary in slightly heavier fabrics and muted colours early on to visually reinforce how trapped and overlooked she feels within the family dynamic.• Several dinner scenes were filmed almost like low-key comedy battles, with actors encouraged to react silently in character to awkward comments rather than waiting for scripted punchlines.• The production team apparently banned overly polished “Instagram Regency” lighting because they wanted the world to feel lived-in and emotionally messy instead of looking like a luxury candle advert.
