Truelove follows a group of old friends in their 70s who, after a few too many drinks at a funeral, make a pact to help each other "shuffle off this mortal coil" before age or illness takes away their dignity. What starts as a hazy, sentimental promise quickly morphs into a visceral reality involving mercy killings, police investigations, and a rekindled teenage flame. By April 2026, it remains one of the most poignant "anti-ageist" thrillers in the archive, proving that life (and crime) doesn't end at retirement. THE PROSLindsay Duncan is 100% authentic as Phil, the retired copper who finds herself on the wrong side of the law she once enforced. Her chemistry with Clarke Peters (Ken) is a sincere highlight, giving us a "second chance" romance that feels earned rather than forced. It’s a total win for representation, featuring a core cast in their 70s—including the brilliant Sue Johnston and Peter Egan—who are allowed to be witty, sexual, and dangerous. The show is a gripping feat of tonal balance, somehow managing to be a dark "mercy-killing" drama one minute and a wry, irreverent comedy the next. THE CONSIt hits an 8/10 because the shift from a sentimental reunion to a "serial killer saga" can give you a bit of whiplash.
