⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Based on the haunting true story from 1997, Under the Bridge dives into the disappearance of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk in a quiet Canadian town. What starts as a search for a missing girl quickly turns into a chilling look at the hidden lives of the local teenagers. Riley Keough plays Rebecca Godfrey, a journalist returning to her hometown who finds herself drawn into the inner circle of the "Seven Nations"—a group of girls accused of a brutal crime. Alongside a local cop played by Lily Gladstone, she peels back the layers of a community that would rather look away than face the rot in its own backyard. THE PROS This is an 8/10 because it handles a sensitive, horrific true story with a lot of maturity and style. Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough are a dream pairing; they bring a grounded, weary energy to the investigation that keeps the show from feeling like a standard "trashy" true crime drama. The series excels at capturing the specific, terrifying social hierarchy of teenage girls, where loyalty is a weapon and the need to fit in can lead to total darkness. It’s an 8 because the 90s aesthetic is spot on without being distracting, and the performances from the younger cast members are disturbingly convincing. THE CONS It misses a 9/10 because the dual perspective—shifting between the investigation and the events leading up to the crime—can occasionally feel a bit disjointed. Her performance was a major talking point during the 2024 awards season, earning several nominations for Best Supporting Actress.• Locations: While set in Saanich, British Columbia, much of the filming took place in and around Vancouver. The production team searched for specific locations that captured the isolated, foggy "island" vibe of the late 90s to keep the atmosphere feeling claustrophobic.
